This week an excerpt from the first book in The Always Cambridge Series. When Holly meets Victor Mayhue for the first time, he's a bit overwhelming for the sheltered mob princess, oh and he's also from a rival family. She should be frightened but instead, she's fascinated, but little does she know, so is he.
He grinned crookedly, extending his hand, offering to help me rise. I thought it was sweet. I reached placing my left hand into his big outstretched palm, accepting his offer of help. I knew by the size of his hand that he would tower over me, but most people did. His hand was warm, I noted again as I rose to my feet. Everyone in the store had moved away from us, and there was no longer a line. It was as if we were the only two people in the store. I thought briefly that was strange, with the holiday crowds.
“Thank you for your help,” I said, letting go of his hand, finally able to look up at him, full on. As I’d suspected, he was tall and broad shouldered. I focused on his face. Oh. My. God! He was gorgeous. His dark hair was perfectly sculpted but messy enough that you wanted to reach out and tame it. As I noted before, his eyes were dark and warm. His perfectly sculpted cheeks covered by a slight five o’clock shadow. Beautiful full lips complete with a dimple that appeared on his cheek as he continued to grin at me. He must be used to this kind of reaction. He was bemused, now, by my staring. But I couldn’t help it. He was stunning. If Randy was the most beautiful man in the world to me, then I had no words for this guy.
And he knew it. He knew exactly what affect he had on me, on most women, I presumed. He looked like the kind of guy who got what he wanted and didn’t have to wait or work at it to get it. He reminded me of the Greek or Roman God, I couldn’t even remember which one at the moment, who was too dazzling to look at, just too beautiful to bear. Even this guy’s skin was flawless and such an amazing warm colour, like he had a permanent tan.
“No problem. My pleasure,” he said.
Oh crap, I couldn’t remember what we’d been talking about. That line from Romeo and Juliet was running through my head. ‘And when I shall die, take him and cut him up in little stars, and he will make the face of heaven so fine that all the world will fall in love with night and pay no worship to the garish sun.’
His grin turned crooked giving him a mischievous-boy look. I bit my lip, racking my brain for something to say. His focus dropped to my lips and I suddenly felt warm all over. Wow! He was something else. Something I had no idea how to handle. I should probably get away from him, but I didn’t really want to.
Blurb - Always Cambridge 1
The Always Cambridge Series chronicles the life of Holly Cambridge through her tumultuous childhood and violent teen years and the consequences that stem from being the daughter of mob boss, Bill Cambridge.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Holly Cambridge is just a typical kid, or so she thinks, until one day, she takes a good look around and realizes her friends don’t have bodyguards dogging their every step.
At the age of sixteen, Holly is assigned a new bodyguard, Randy Phillips. He is a tall, muscular, God-like force in the young, impressionable and lonely girl’s life. He is her friend, her confident, her conscience, and the older man she adores beyond reason.
Randy Phillips is fully aware of his young charge’s adolescent crush on him. Although he is flattered by the adulation, he maintains a safe distance and professional demeanour until Holly is wounded in a rival family blood feud, and the course of both their lives is changed forever.
Hope you enjoyed the snip. Hop on through the linky list below for this week's MSS participants.

ReplyDeleteYeah, he sounds kind of perfect. Good stuff!
ReplyDeleteLove it!
ReplyDeleteI really love the premise of this series. Following a character through life and challenges adds so much depth to them. You get to really know them.
